When Valentina was a little girl, not even her daddy could get away from having his hair being styled by her. Naturally, as she grew up only one profession came into question: hairdresser. Soon the dream of opening own hair salon followed. But the starting capital is not yet enough, and Valentina is working on stocking it up with freelance work. With every article the dream of owning her own hairdressing salon comes a little bit closer.

Well that is a pretty insulting title. You probably read that and thought that such a statement is ridiculous. After all, you have done everything you can to protect your hair. You wash it regularly. Maybe you use shampoos and conditioners that are good for your scalp and hair. There is no way that you could be damaging your hair.

All of those things may be true, but that does not mean that you are not doing things that could be damaging your hair. In fact, it is likely that you are doing damage and do not even know it.

This article is not meant to insult you or accuse you of anything. Instead, it is meant to educate you on what you should be doing to better take care of your hair. You want to have the best possible hair you can, so here are the things you may want to be paying attention to.

Using Too Much Conditioner

They say that too much of a good thing is never good for you, and that is the case with conditioner as well. This is actually one of the most common ways that you can damage your hair. The reason is that so many people make this mistake. They assume that if they use too much conditioner that all it will do is just wash out. That is not what happens, however.

The truth is that your hair only needs a limited amount of conditioner. Actually not much more than a dab the size of a quarter, no matter how long your hair is. You should spread evenly across your hair, focusing on areas that are more prone to the elements.

Too Much Heat – Part I

One of the most common ways that your hair can get damaged is through the use of hairdryers, curling irons, or hair straighteners. These devices are normally perfectly acceptable to use, but far too many people use them at higher temperatures or for prolonged periods of time.

The truth is that you should use these for no more than a few minutes each day and at temperatures that are no more than 300 degrees. Doing much more than this is going to damage your hair over time.

Too Much Heat – Part II

The sun is great. It is essential or we would not be around. People love to spend time in the sun, going to the beach, working in the yard, or playing baseball on a nice summer day. It is great.

However, it can also do a lot of damage to your hair. The sun not only damages your hair but your scalp as well. It dries your hair and skin, which can make it irritated. It can also make your hair dry and brittle, making it more likely that it will break.

One other issue is that a dry scalp can lead to an itchy feeling. This can cause you to scratch a lot, which can pull out your hair and lead to flakes.

Brushing Your Hair When It Is Wet

This is another one of those things that everybody does. You get out of the shower, dry your hair off with a towel, or at least dry it enough and start brushing your hair. This makes it easier for you to style you conclude.

That may be true, but it also leads to a lot of damage to your hair. The worst of the problems is that your hair will become tangled around the bristles of the brush. This causes the brush to pull the hair out of your head. Besides this being irritating, it can lead to you losing your hair. It often pulls the hair at the root, which can lead to damage to the skin and pore as well.

If you are going to brush your hair when it is wet, make sure that you use a brush that has wide teeth and soft bristles. This greatly decreases the risk of damage.

Not Getting Your Hair Cut

There are those who love to have long hair. They look great when their locks are past down their shoulders, maybe way down their backs. This can be a great look. It can also lead to your hair getting damaged.

It is not that there is anything wrong with having long hair, that is as long as you properly take care of it. Some decide that they want their hair to just grow so they do not get it cut for months, maybe even years. This is not a good idea.

You should never go more than three months without cutting your hair. I does not require that you get a lot of your hair cut. You can have less than an inch removed. What is important is that you have those split ends and damaged portions of your hair taken away. Doing this will keep other parts of your hair from becoming damaged.

Too Many Treatments in Your Hair

While all of the things we have mentioned can do damage, this is at the top of the list. The chemicals that are used in these treatments are often not good for your hair. Some are made with quality products and use formulas that only enhance the look of your hair without causing any damaging effects, but that is not true of all of them.

Some of these treatments can do serious damage to your hair and scalp, especially if you are getting them on a regular basis. The truth is that even if you are using the right types of chemicals, you should not have a hair treatment more than twice a year. This includes hair coloring.

Your hair can be sensitive and it can be damaged by continually adding chemicals. This is why you need to make sure that you are being smart and protecting your hair at all costs. Keep in mind that protecting your hair now will make it more vibrant and healthy when you are older.
